Giant Jungle

Sonic the hedgehog in Giant Jungle is my first hack. This Sonic 1 hack's focus is speed, you don't need to worry about time because there are no time overs, although the timer stops at 9:59, and there are no lives, so you can die in a level as much as you want.

Sonic appears smaller allowing the player to see what's ahead earlier, and levels are much bigger, each act lasting over two minutes. You'll be able to practice each act or play the whole game in the menu. Collecting the 6 giant rings in full mode allows you to access act 4 and get the good ending.

Sonic's moveset is the same from Sonic Mania, and there's also a red shield which works the same way as the fireshield.

All levels have been modified and all of them have bosses, each boss has it's own music and each act has two songs, the only songs that are from the original Sonic 1 are the Got Through theme and the Final boss song. Some of the levels require more exploration than others (Specially the second part of act 1).

Credits
  • All music is either made by me or from the original Sonic 1 (MD).
  • The disassembly used is Sonic 1: 28 and the code from the Sonic Retro Spin dash guide was used.
  • There are graphics taken from the MD sonic games (S1,S2,S3K,KChaotix,SCD) and also the bad ending and good ending images are from SAdventure2 and SCD respectively. (Some backgrounds and other graphics were made by me)

Not a fan of the music at all, but I like the concept of a small Sonic. Also, the gravity thing with the moon was pretty cool!

EDIT: After giving this hack a few more tries, I must say that it won me over. Don't get me wrong, in its current state, the hack is a complete mess. BUT, I really, really like the wackiness and unorthodox vibe of it. If this hack weren't submitted as unjudged, it would EASILY win the Most-Potential Trophy for me. Absolutely stoked to see it return next year!

I enjoy the concept, but I think the level design could be improved. I see potential in this if you plan to revise this in the future. Good work so far!

I love the concept of this title as well as the new power up and the new bosses, especially the final boss. I was not a fan of the level layout, but I really did enjoy the aesthetics of your levels, combining mostly Sonic 3 & K with Sonic 1 assests worked really well in my book.. The music was a bit hit and miss. I was not a fan of the act 1 music, but I found the act 2 to be very appropriate. I look forward to seeing more!

It's strange that this hack got into the unappreciated. I liked the idea. Good replayability and an interest in complete completion. But because of the comments: "adapt the levels"

There are a lot of rough edges here (some of the level design is confusing, and I don't like the music very much), but I absolutely love your creativity! I appreciate your boldness, and the interesting ideas and gimmicks programmed in (the moon gravity and physics, rail grinding), and I can't wait to see how this gets polished in the future.

I love the horror and mysterious atmosphere that this hacks gives, and some of the bosses were interesting. Athough, the layout can be rough at some edges, and little bit confusing at times like the beginning part of the second level.

I see some interesting ideas on this hack (little doors! Skate those wires!), some layouts that range from "barebones" to "very confusing", art that is not bad for a first version, that boss that certainly is novel for a 2D Sonic game (and equally disorientating!) and... ear grating creepy music.

This needs a LOT of work, but it's not bad for a starting point! Smol Sonic needs more air time :D
