Welcome to Sonic 2 VS, a multiplayer-focused ROM hack of the original Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Mega Drive!

The focus of this ROM hack is everything 2-player mode. We have majorly overhauled the entire thing to optimise it for your enjoyment and playing experience, and now all zones from Emerald Hill through to Metropolis are available to play. Customise how you want your versus experience to be, with the ability to choose how many zones to play in a round, how the scoring of each level works, and even specific item priorities.

Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are all available to play as. Both players can even select the same character! All three have their signature moves, with Sonic able to use Mania's drop dash, Tails can fly and swim, and Knuckles can glide and climb. You can also choose between multiple palettes available for each character to customise to your own preferences.

The Special Stages have been completely rewritten to offer a much smoother, graphically-enhanced experience, making them feel a lot more like the RSDK remakes and to show just what the Mega Drive is actually capable of. Find a starpost during your versus experience and play in a variety of 1-section Bonus Stages to gain or lose rings on your opponent before returning to normal play. There are a significant number of new tie breaker Special Stages added as well, be sure to check them out!

Try out the new Super VS Battle, where both characters are instantly in their super form and have to not only hunt down the other player from a random starting point in the level but battle each other until they run out of rings and make the other perish.

And while the focus isn't specifically on it, the single player experience has had various enhancements as well. Try it out to find everything that's been improved on the original!

A lot more has been done than just that listed here, and there is a lot more to come, so grab a friend and enjoy Sonic 2 VS!

That title screen alone sold me on this hack, seriously some impressive stuff with smooth sprite scaling on the md, the special stages feel unreal and makes me feel like my md is gonna burn at any time!

It's finally here, in playable form, the improved special stages.

Happens if the second player dies in the chemical plant pit underwater (might be only in the super vs mode?). this bug persists until the game is hard reset lol.

I had a similar bug happen in Bizhawk in normal mode, except it made the entire second screen black until hard resetting. I forget what caused it. Also, Sonic's standing sprite is one pixel too high in multiplayer mode.

I played this with my brother and it was super fun! I really liked the Super Battles and the smooth special stages.

I will say that this is very techincally impressive! It can trick anyone to believe that this is a legit remaster of S2 on a modern console lol.
