Sonic 1: Unfinished Example Remade (Fixed Update)

By DarkShamilKhan

Introduction:

This is Sonic 1: Unfinished Example Remade. You might have seen on Youtube played by many. This ROM hack aims to be a hack made by a beginner who is slowly learning assembly day by day over time. And to show how a ROM hack is made by a beginner. Unlike the last release back in November of 2022, this aims to fix any bugs or glitches that were missed by me and fix them along with making the hack feel short and sweet. And stuff that I always wanted to add, but couldn't add at the time due to poor understanding of assembly. The level design hasn't been changed; some objects have been moved around here and there, but you won't be able to notice it. And some optimized routines to make the game feel a bit smoother. I might have missed out on some stuff. But enough talking! Let's jump into the controls for Sonic!

Controls:

  • Spindash [down+A/B/C]
  • Double Jump [A/B/C then A]
  • Air Dash[A/B/C then B]
  • Downward Dash[A/B/C then C]

As for the stuff that has been changed and added.

  • The spindash sound revving up now works, although it is using the Sonic 3K way.
  • Spindash Dust has been added directly from the current version of the S2 disassembly with some modifications.
  • Multidraw has also been ported directly from Sonic 2. With some obvious tweaks to support Sonic 1.
  • Speaking of Multidraw, the invincibility now uses Sonic 2's invincibility object.
  • AfterImages has been ported directly from Sonic 3 and Knuckles Disassembly, with some tweaks to support it. The old one was trash anyway.
  • Some music changes and replacements. Added and ported 2 songs by me by extending the Music List.
  • Some new samples and the obvious SHC screen.
  • Additional level intros ala Sonic 3K. Although some zones don't have intros.

Just so I remind you this, ROM Hack won't get any more updates if any of you expect any. Other than bug fixing and tweaks to the code. But no major updates are going to be added, like any level design changes, new levels. Or maybe extra content. I wanted to move on from this project. So, after SHC, I plan to release/open-source this disassembly to the public. If any of you want to see how I did my coding over the years.

And if you want to go to the level select.

U, D, D, R - US region

U, U, D, D, L, R - JP Region

If you have any suggestions or criticisms, let me know. Despite being an old hack, I'll accept any criticism. Anyhow, I hope you enjoy this ROM hack.

PS; Wait on the SHC screen for the funny SFX =P.

the level design here is so entertaining and enjoyable! although the color palette and some extra art changes could make this much better
