Sonic 1 Level Creator - Tech Demo

By RobiWanKenobi

Finally, Mario Maker for the Genesis.

Sonic the Hedgehog Level Creator

Sonic The Hedgehog Level Creator is a hack where you make your own Green Hill Zones, on the Genesis/Mega Drive itself.

The original intent of creating this hack was to hopefully get a few less people to ask about making ROM Hacks on their phones; and in discussing this with some good friends of mine in the community, we thought that the best comprimise was a hack that had real-time level editing; the hack has kind of spiraled out of control since then though.

The hack is in an early stage of development, so expect to encounter bugs; however, also do not be disuaded by the "TECH DEMO" naming, this is still very much a game, it is only there to represent how much there is left to do.

Using Premade Levels:

Note that these levels were originally made with a smaller canvas, so there are some empty chunks at the end of each. They were also made in a more unstable version of the hack.

There are Python scripts included to convert SRAM files from one type to another.

Premade_1 has a drop at the start before you see any chunks, do not be alarmed, I did not put any dick moves there.

None of the premade levels use the regular Green Hill Zone music by default.

There are preset files for BizHawk, KEGA Fusion, and BlastEm; for other emulators, you'll need to know where your SRAM files are stored, and how they are written.

  • An easy way to test this is just try one of the generic ones (I'd reccomened starting with TypeOE (Odd and Even bits are written to the file)), and if no level data loads, try the other (TypeO, Odd Bytes only).
  • You will need to know where your SRAM files are stored, and how they are named
  • ClownMDEmu is also TypeOE

For Everdrives:

  • Mega Everdrive Pro: TypeO
  • Everdrive x5 & x3: TypeOE (The file for KEGA Fusion works as a perfect drop-in for these flashcarts), put it in MEGA/SAVE
    • REMEMBER TO SOFT RESET BEFORE POWERING OFF ON THE EVERDRIVE X3 FOR SRAM TO SAVE!
  • Others: Untested

Fun Fact: This has taken me 5 months so far.

MAJOR BUGS:

  • Objects sometimes duplicate themselves when saving, sometimes a lot

NOTE FOR YOUTUBE PUBLISHING: Track $17 is Breaking The Habit by Linkin Park, if you scroll past in in the music selection menu, you probably wont get docked for it, but you may not want to use it in any video playthroughs. Track $03 is a remix of a free-to-use song.

And, maybe while you're at it mess around on the title screen .

In a fit of insomnia, I've realized that I forgot to mention something crucial in the description.

If the game doesn't allow you to place objects, it is because you have run out of object RAM to load the objects into; this is more apparent in the premade levels, as they were made in a more unstable version of the hack.

Still love CSS, This is nice though! CSS is good for those who don't have access to a PC/Emulator

HOW'S THAT EVEN POSSIBLE?!?! So expensive hack.

Some of the music reminds me of Sonic 1 Megamix, why? Also, the sprites reminds me of Sonic 1 Mixed including Sonic Oddzone by DoujinPixation.

Well I certain had a blast spamming badniks in the level, until I ran out of object RAM and added enough badniks to fill up the respawn table lol

I wonder what adding mouse support to this would be like.

Super Sonic Maker: 68K Edition

I can see kids at home getting a blast with this, build your own Sonic games from the comfort of your console. And yes, this screams for mouse support!
