Sonic Mania Breakout is a complete remake of the original Breakout arcade game (during its 50th annivesary no less, which I didn't realize until writing this up), which makes use of Sonic Mania's assets to give the game a complete refresh. This entry is unique in the sense that by using various tools provided by the RSDK modding community, it is able to run on its own standalone files and can run seperate without having to load it as a mod for Sonic Mania's decompilation.
This is very small showcase that I decided to put out for the contest this year, so there's not too much content wise. Though hopefully, you'll have fun with what's here! This showcase includes features such as:
Game Controls/Overview:
The game at its core is just Breakout, but here's an overview regardless. You move a paddle along the screen to bounce the player up to hit item boxes, which some contain power ups which can be used to avoid obstacles created by events. Starting the game either requires you to press up after spawning in or waiting until the player is automatically launched (pressing left or right before launch will make the player start moving in that respective direction). Letting the player go beyond the bottom bounds of the screen will cause a death then respawn shortly after.
Occasionally, a wheel will pop up on screen and will land on a tile and start a random event. Events can either help you or hinder you and can alter the game's progression. Powerups often or not can help you get through conditions events may throw at you. After completeing an act, you'll be tallied on clear bonus (for each consecutive round completed), an event bonus (for each completed event), a life bonus (how many lives you have by the end of an act) and potentially a perfect bonus (only awarded if you complete an act without dying once).
// --- INSTALLATION --- //
Installing the game is straighforward, download the main zip file below and extract the contents onto your computer (preferably a similar place to where your normal decomp install is or where you would keep games). The binaries in the main download are for 64-bit Windows systems, but also included are binaries for those playing on a 32-bit Windows system. If this applies to you, download the x86/Win32 zip instead.
Controller Usage and Input:
Due to the binaries included being based on the release builds provided by the RSDKv5(U) repo, only XInput (i.e. Xbox controllers) is available with no DirectInput support. Due to this, you may need to use tools such as DS4Windows or Steam Input (in the case of the latter you would add the game as a non-Steam game).
Default Control Maps (Keyboard):
Default Control Maps (Controller):
Unfortunately, I never got the time to add a proper options menu. Though options such as controls, screen settings and other things can be adjusted in the Settings.ini file included in the downloads. I've taken the liberty to label some quick settings if you're looking to change something specific. Alternatively, you can also copy and paste the Settings.ini file from a base Mania decomp install into this one to get your preferred settings.
NOTE: Ensure the game is closed if you are making changes to the Settings.ini file. The game cannot properly save settings if the file is changed and saved while it is still running.
// --- BUILDING (Optional) --- //
Again, this section is COMPLETELY optional. It is NOT required if the above installation guide works out for you.
Included below in the extra downloads is the game's source code and data. By default, both main downloads are intended for Windows systems. Though with the source code, there's nothing stopping you from building the game for another desired platform. There are build instructions in the source code's download that you can follow to help you in doing so (the build instructions assume you're familiar with builiding the RSDKv5(U) decompilation). This project was made with the RSDKv5U deompilation in mind, not RSDKv5 (yes, the 'U' at the end matters). Some parts of the game will not function properly if built for the latter engine revision.
// --- OUTRO --- //
Anyways, that should be it. More than likely, I'll add onto this project in this near future and add aditional content and features. For now, I hope you enjoy this quick showcase as much as I enjoyed making it!
