Go go Gadget, Mod Description!

(Re)Introducing, the most MYSTIFIED MOD in all of Westside Island... The Mystic Cave Zone Remake!

The Mystic Cave Zone Remake (MCZR for short) adds Mystic Cave Zone from Sonic The Hedgehog 2 into Sonic 3 A.I.R. without replacing any other stage in the game. This mod is jam packed with a bunch of new features and changes, such as layout, visual, and music changes, a brand new miniboss for Act 1, many cool and original gamemodes to play, achievements to earn, and more! *Including like 1 million options.

Here's a rundown on those Gamemodes:

  • Remake Mode: This is the main attraction! Play through a remade version of Mystic Cave Zone Act 1 & 2 with new features and additions, including a custom section of Act 2 made for Knuckles!
  • Classic Mode: Prepare for a blast from the past! Classic mode features an almost 1:1 recreation of the ORIGINAL Mystic Cave Zone Act 1 & 2 from 1992. It even changes the sound effects, hud, and title card to the ones from Sonic 2! So retro...
  • Original Layouts: Do you like the new visual and music changes added from remake mode, but don't want the level design changes? Use the Original Layouts Option! (Some options in the settings are exclucive to this mode, such as the pit of endless despare and misery.)
  • Lava Cave: Let's heat things up, shall we? Lava has filled Mystic Cave, and it's up to Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles to escape! Platform across this harder version of Mystic Cave Zone Act 1, but watch your step, as the lava kills you instantly, no matter how many rings you have!
  • Hyudoro's Revenge: Fight through your fears! Two of the Hyudoro's from Sandopoils escaped and have come to haunt Team Sonic's visit back to Westside Island. Remember, there's no such thing as a friendly ghost! Sneak, hide behind boxes, and find the signpost before the Hyudoro's catch up to you. Be careful, because you have no Rings! (This mode even comes with a skin! You like Sonic The Hedgehog Right?)

These Gamemodes can be changed from the Sonic 3 A.I.R. Options Menu!

Completeing all of the achievements give you a reward! Good luck!

You can access Mystic Cave AND the Achievements Menu via The Data Select and/or Act Select Menus. However, you'll need to find it first. There is a hidden Warp Ring located in Lava Reef Zone after the part where the miniboss falls into a pit of lava. If you know how Sonic Games work, Right is always the way :) Don't go up!

NOTE: THIS MOD IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH ANY ULTRAWIDE MODS YET!!

Also as a little note here:

DO NOT PLAY THIS MOD WITH THE CLASSIC TRANSPARENCY MOD AND WATER+ MOD. MCZR IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH IT

Rockman40 @ 2026-10-29 20:50:30

* expression after hearing screams of pleading*…will you make it compatible then? I'm loving this new version. Keep it up. Also, “classic” transparency? I’m using one named “moar transparency”. Is that fine?

Tristan2 @ 2026-10-22 17:41:31

TOO MANY OPTIONS, TOO MANY MODS, DOUBLE PEAK!!!!!

Knux Team @ 2026-10-22 18:08:45

Also 3 bugs we got after deadline:

- if you turn off the mcz2 water option and remake mode, when you are at that falling minecart cutscene, you cant jump higher to get out of the ground, so char will died (dont worry, you will be respawn in checkpoint after cutscenes)

- When you have reward ability and fall to a pit while you are hurting, you will be stuck (you need to restart from a checkpoint or level)

- some minor bugs

We will fix these bugs after shc, in gamebanana the mod page

Another note: PUT THIS MOD ON TOP OF EVERY MOD to avoid any bugs and you dont really need CZS mod because now this mod has its own

However, remember there are some mods that needs to be top of this mod to works

The mod is incompatible with "Seamless HPZ Transition". If you use any other mods it is recommended to disable them unless their compatibility with MCZ:R is stated.

VladFantom @ 2026-10-23 16:06:33

I disabled that mod and it still doesn't work, strange, I'll check some others

MilesWithTails @ 2026-10-23 23:14:17

Try enabling only MCZ:R and check if the issue still persists.

This level is a lot of fun. The upgraded graphics look great and I like that you added a mine cart to it. There's a lot to explore, however I was not a fan of the boss. Sonic fans tend to way over complicate bosses. We don't have to die 500 times for a boss to be good. Also, when fighting him, sometimes my rings would disappear. Keep it to 8 hits, I'd say and you've got one amazing level

Knux Team @ 2026-10-24 03:39:02

Thanks. Also, In the mod option, there are options to lower the boss's healths.

Ah, thanks, there's a lot of options and I think I didn't go through them all. The Lava cave and Hyudoro's Revenge mods are a lot of fun. I was unable to make it to the end of Hyudoro's Revenge though. But I'll keep trying, I think it's a good challenge and being able to hide behind the boxes is a pretty unique idea

EDIT

I just saw a video and I was right at the end like twice lol

Thanks again. Also here are some tips for hyudoros revenge mode: - the ghosts dont catch you if they dont see you (i know its obvious but in first demo, the ghosts always catch you), - if you hide (the ghost always re appears faster than you are not hiding and when you are far away from them and you are hiding, they will re appears again) (Well, probally these tips dont really useful)

FgThRngd @ 2026-10-25 00:37:00

I will admit, seeing other people's reactions to this made me feel like this was a bad mod. Now, after playing through Remake Mode, I thought this was a pretty nice mod but I disabled most of the effects because I DESPISE certain mods that add too much visuals or disgusting smooth rotation cough cough you know exactly who you are. I will admit it's still bloated for a Mystic Cave port for Sonic 3 AIR but you definitely put in some effort into it.

Knux Team @ 2026-10-25 02:26:58

hmm yeah i think i did too much for effects. but if you want it feels more to sonic 3 air, just enable "'sonic 3/genesis style" option in the mod options.

SomerandomX @ 2026-10-25 07:37:33

Hey so like, whenever i use this mod and make changes in the settings, whenever i load it back up again it gets reverted

Knux Team @ 2026-10-25 18:08:14

Hi Neon here.

Yea I don't know why that happens. It doesn't save options when I play on mobile, but it does save when I play on PC.

But also on PC, some of my mods don't save it's settings too. Such as mods like Sonic Galactic Wall Dash.

So this is probably just a Sonic 3 AIR issue. It's weird.

SONIC123CDMANIA @ 2026-10-28 09:24:13

Playing with Metal Madness, Amy Galore +, Majtastic Fixes, The Works, WeatherMod, Pooka Party, Rey Tracer + RSDK physics, & CPZ mods. The only ones that really hamper MCZR is the 2 character mods. Metal Sonic & Amy fail to destroy the boxes at the start of the minecart section, and Amu can't break the spikes. That's literally the only downside. Everything else works great! Seeing Metal Sonic & Amy's movesets used in MCZ is awesome!

Knux Team @ 2026-10-28 15:57:11

Thanks! Also have you put mcz above all of your mods? (Espically above amy galore and metal)

SONIC123CDMANIA @ 2026-10-29 03:40:10

Well, gosh darn it, that was the problem! Thanks! (Also, not relevant to the MCRZ mod but Metal Sonic & Amy can't break the ice in CPZ. NVM, mod priority thing again.)

SONIC123CDMANIA @ 2026-10-29 10:02:38

Also, it would be nice for an option where you can toggle between the normal MCZ2-HPZ and having the MCZ2 end-of-zone big ring take you back where you entered MCZ from so you could go through MCZ and still go through all of LRZ too. Maybe even include a S2 HPZ as an extra within MCZ.

NeoTheDJ @ 2026-10-28 17:47:12

Ok so like. Is there a way to remove the new menu music. I'm losing my mind in the giant slab of settings and can't find a way to toggle it please help.

Knux Team @ 2026-10-29 02:43:31

Unfortunely there is no option for that. Because AIR menu music cant be script modified till now (for some reason, its still hardcoded). Actually It is supposed to be play the new music if you have unlocked mcz (if its possible). But if you want really remove it, go to audio folder in the mod, search audio_replacements.json and search "2F" and delete that entry.
