Sonic Travesty Blues V1.2 (SHC Edition)

By K. Puffin

Well, this is weird. Me? Submitting a Hack for a contest? Theres no way I'd do that out of the blue!

...Okay, I don't know why I did the above text, but speaking of something out of the blue: Welcome to Travesty Blues! A Hack that became more than Level Design practice and more of a full fledged project... After like, what? How many months has it been since I last updated this hack? February!?! Sheesh!

In this edition for the lovely contest, I've added a couple new additions for the next version. But hold on, we just got this version just now? If you didn't know, heres what the original V1.2 added:

  • Overhauled SHZ and CMZ (Formerly TZ)
  • Added 3 New Levels: ABZ, BWZ, and FTZ
  • Insane Optimizations (S3K Object & Ring Managers, Moduled PLC System)
  • Brand new Sonic Sprites! (You can thank Dolphman for that, just got that off of spriters resources.)
  • New(ish) Title Screen
  • A LOT of Bugfixes and Improvements. No, its not "OMFG I HAVE A GAME BREAKING BUG ARRRGHH!", just alot of bugs... And Improvements
  • New Music that doesn't rely on Clone Drivers Presets, only little of it anyway.

As you can see from the crude changelog, I did A LOT in 3 Weeks alone. Anyhow, enjoy this edition of V1.2!

I don't care if the link is broken. YOU DO NOT EVER FUCKING DO THAT!

There is a reason people DESPISE you.

Mildanner @ 2026-10-22 19:36:47

I get it, due to them.

If anyone is struggling on THAT level, heres the map to it.

While I do admire some of the artwork here, the level design leaves a lot to be desired. The maze structed levels were not fun to play and felt like a chore having to constantly repeat certain sections just because I missed a jump. Also, I would have preferred if you left out levels that were hardly changed aside from the palette.

K. Puffin @ 2026-10-22 20:15:38

Yeah, I understand if you despise the maze level. That one is getting replaced entirely, I also might plan on adding something to combat the Levels that were hardly changed like a screen to ask you if you want to continue or not.

Honestly, its decent.

Sprite additions are truly great! Stuck in yellow labyrinth for weeks

This hack is solid, with some negatives that really weigh it down:

-I like Sonic's Sprites!

-I enjoyed the design of the stage with the SOZ Act 2 music.

-Music is very generic, would be nice to see some intentionality there, rather than using stock available ports.

TheInvisibleSun @ 2026-10-25 16:27:59

-There are some layout leftovers from the original Marble Zone that don't make sense, and lead to nothing but the player taking damage.

-The Maze layout is already obtuse to play, but keeping in the Time Over kind of adds insult to injury.

-The level art up through LZ is neat, but some of it still feels like Sonic 1 with more detail, rather than something new.

My day be so fine

Then BOOM

maze level

dilworks @ 2026-10-28 16:45:08

Unimpressive art, ordinary music... but the maze levels really kill the fun on this one.

Not that I hate maze levels... but they're better on a dedicated hack (something like Jester's Challenge), not as part as a regular Sonic level (or at least if you must, keep it brief, because the clock is not your friend).
