Mach The Porcupine SHC 2026 DEMO

RAD, BAD, SPIKEY AND MAD! MACH THE PORCUPINE

Mach The Porcupine is a modification of Sonic the Hedgehog for the SEGA Genesis / SEGA Mega Drive inspired by the Sonic 1 concept art and scrapped content, with the objective of bringing a new experience in new shoes, featuring a new protagonist, "Mach The Porcupine".

Story

The once joyful Christmas Island is in danger! An ancient being from the nightmare realm breaks into this world, transforming the habitants of Christmas island into distorted versions of themselves.

Mach must speedrun into a chaotic aventure to restore peace in his home and defeat this new threat once and for all.

Changelog

So...you have to do a list of all the changes done in the base game.

  • New Title screen & splash screen
  • Modified camera behaviour on zones
  • Custom Objects (few..sorry..)
  • Custom Music
  • Custom Graphics (except a few)
  • Custom Palettes
  • Custom Levels (2 for this demo! with really fun layout)

This was pretty much a rushed thing, fun fact.

¿Why is this marked as Unjudged?

While yes it's our first entry ever, this is not the full potential of the hack, as i have a lot of things still in the making in another version for next year, such as new objects, obstacles and all.

However! i wanted to at least try and step into the contest to at least make the team be known (just me and my musician, for now.)

Credits

Chron Delta: Amazing music featured in the hack

Pxanvalley: Minimal code help related to title screen

Selbi: Help with programming new objects

Sonic Retro Communnity (a lot of them gave me nice tips and explanations, plus without their tutorials i wouldn't have branched out to do my own modifications)

Holly molly. The first hack I played during this year's SHC, and it was really good. Music is nice, graphics is cute. Level design is questionable, but quite entertaining. I don't undertstand, why we fight devil on the goat here instead of Eggman, but it's funny choice, why not lol.

Good hack overall. Really liked playing this one.

The visuals and music was very lovely, nice art overhaul! The enemy placement was a bit rough in a few spots, specifically in the second act of the second zone and onwards.

It's fantastic in every way, from the music and the technical aspects to the amazing sound, as if Vada Pega had done it, and it's even better than South Island Expedition.

Liking what I'm seeing~

Short and sweet, the layouts are quite clean, the art is pretty good (Especially your take on MZ), not too hard, and the music was the weakest part but still a very enjoyable experience.

Made an account just to comment. Loving what I'm seeing so far, Mach's sprites are very expressive and the level design is layered and engaging. I really hope this is finished one day because I can see Mach joining Kawarino in my regular Sonic hack lineup. Fantastic work!

Hello! creator from the hack here; thanks a lot for the feedback and support!

For some people who have questions about the weird enemy in the boss sections, that's our main antagonist! the so called "ancient being from the nightmare realm" thing mentioned in the story. (next demo will have proper introduction, so apologies for confusion lol)

This hack is cool.

Sorry about I didn't add my hack for shc2026

I like this, keep going with this hack!!!!!

This is a great first time entry!

The music is wonderful across the board (although I hate Sonic CD's jump sound with a passion lol)

I don't love the level art so far though, personally; some of it is kind of "muddy" and too busy to look at. I think Mach looks nice though and is animated well

TheInvisibleSun @ 2026-10-24 15:21:40

I'd watch the object/badnik placement as you move forward, as there were some awkward moments here and there (i.e. getting hit by horizontal spikes while they're in the wall).

Nice job so far, can't wait to see updates to this one!

I liked the rom hack, and I liked the idea of what if Sonic 1 was made in an alternative timelines, here are the pros and cons:

Pros:

- The artstyle looks fantastic

- The music sounds amazing and

- Some of the levels' design are pretty neat and original

Cons:

- The badnik's position is less forgiving

- The HUD looks awful (including the HUD Numbers, but not the life icon)

- Level Softlocks

But other than that, its a cool hack

I don't think the HUD looks terrible but I think a more stylish speedometer look would be really cool, like the C's in the title screen.
