Amendment #6 - Last Minute Rule Change

By giovanni.gen @ 2024-09-15 13:49:51

We have received one particular submission that, although it doesn't violate the SHC rules, can actually test the boundaries of tolerance of some of our Judges, on account of the entry being particularly disturbing.

In response, we are introducing a new exception to Judgment, effective immediately, which is as follows:

"If a Judge deems an entry exceptionally gruesome or disturbing, and the entry does not otherwise violate the rules of the Sonic Hacking Contest, they may still exempt themselves from Judgment. This, however, may only be granted on serious and particularly grave instances."

We understand that introducing new rules of this kind may not be a popular move, but understand that the welfare of all involved with the Sonic Hacking Contest is important. For entries of this kind, you will be given a warning through an appropriate notice on the entry's listing.

What kind of entry would be gruesome or disturbing if stuff that would've won the "Shadow Trophy" back in the day isn't allowed these days?

Do note that, per the rules of the Sonic Hacking Contest, as well as recent precedent, we allow entries featuring violence, swearing, and blood. The entry in question featured these and has story elements that touches upon topics that called for the creation of this exception, while also not violating other rules.

It is hard to comment without knowing what the "disturbing" issue, but if it is that disturbing, then when why allow it to be entered?

Say for example "rape" was mentioned in the story opening of a hack, would that be acceptable? Personally, I would find that ill-taste, and I could see some people finding that offsensive for those who have been put in that situation.

Maybe some sort of Age Rating / Warnings should be put in place? Like what the ESRB do. So if a hack contains sex, drugs, bloody violence, swearing etc, the user would be made aware of it, and can avoid the entry if this stuff disturbs them.

Edit: The 512 letter limit is very irritating.
